<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Xiaonan Lu, a researcher at Washington State University, has published results of his work with the <strong>garlic-derived</strong> compound diallyl sulfide, demonstrating how effective it is in killing bacteria.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The discovery could lead to <strong>new treatments</strong> for raw and processed meats and food preparation surfaces to prevent campylobacter.</span></p>
<div id="DivContentRect"><span style="font-size: medium;">Most infections stem from eating raw or <strong>undercooked poultry</strong>, or foods that have been cross-contaminated.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Fellow researcher <strong>Michael Konkel</strong> says: “This is the first step in developing or thinking about new intervention strategies. Campylobacter is the most <strong>common bacterial</strong> cause of food-borne illness in the United States and probably the world.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Although this research is focusing on external uses, garlic has long has a reputation as an effective anti-microbial substance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Garlic is definitely known to have antibacterial properties which may be beneficial for health. “It’s been used way, way back. Garlic used as an <strong>antibacterial</strong> has been recognised for a very long time.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">“With quite a lot of compounds they can be negatively impacted by heat. Heating may actually be destroying the compounds which are of benefit. There are some benefits you can still get from <strong>cooked garlic</strong>, but not all.” Crushed garlic in dressings and garlic butter is certainly a more palatable way of taking it than eating raw cloves.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Other properties attributed to garlic are <strong>cardiovascular benefits</strong> and anti-inflammatory properties which may help ease arthritis. It is also believed to be a protection against some cancers and it helps the body metabolise iron.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Lister has co-authored a paper looking at the <strong>beneficial properties</strong> of allium species, which includes onions, garlic and shallots. In it she mentions Louis Pasteur’s recording of <strong>garlic</strong>’s antibacterial properties as far back as 1858.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Garlic is sometimes referred to as <strong>Russian penicillin</strong> because, even until quite recently, it was widely used by Russian doctors to treat infections.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">“We still don’t fully understand the nitty-gritty mechanics of how it works,” she says.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Medical researcher Professor Shaun Holt welcomed the new study into garlic, saying it was well worth trying if it could help in the fight against harmful bacteria.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">“If it’s good at destroying bacteria that’s really useful because antibiotic resistance is a big problem. In fact it’s one of the top three health issues worldwide. Now <strong>natural products</strong> are fighting back.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Multivitamins</strong> are America’s favourite dietary supplement. About one-third of adults take them. Yet no government agency recommends their routine use for preventing chronic diseases, and few studies have tested them to see if they can.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">A leading preventive medicine task force even recommends against <strong>beta-carotene supplements</strong>, alone or with other vitamins, to prevent cancer or heart disease because some studies have found them harmful. And vitamin K can affect bleeding and interfere with some commonly used heart drugs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Sesso’s study involved nearly 15,000 healthy male <strong>doctors</strong> given monthly packets of Centrum Silver or fake multivitamins. After about 11 years, there were no differences between the groups in heart attacks, strokes, chest pain, <strong>heart failure</strong> or heart-related deaths.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Side effects were fairly similar except for more rashes among vitamin users.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The <strong>National Institutes</strong> of Health paid for most of the study. Pfizer supplied the pills and other companies supplied the packaging.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The same study a few weeks ago found that multivitamins cut the chance of developing cancer by eight per cent – a modest amount and less than what can be achieved from a <strong>good diet</strong>, exercise and not smoking.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Multivitamins also may have different results in women or people less healthy than those in this <strong>study</strong> – only four per cent smoked, for example.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The fish oil studies tested <strong>prescription-strength omega-3 capsules</strong> from several companies in two different groups of people in preventing atrial fibrillation, a fluttering, irregular heartbeat.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">One from South America aimed to prevent recurrent episodes in 600 participants who already had the condition.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The other sought to prevent it from developing in 1500 people from the US, Italy and Argentina has various types of <strong>heart surgery</strong>, such as valve replacement. About one third of <strong>heart surgery patients</strong> develops atrial fibrillation as a complication.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Both studies found <strong>fish oil</strong> ineffective.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">These look like <strong>apples or pears</strong>, but Quinces are much healthier and may help to ward off the flu. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">They are high in anti-viral phenolic compounds that have been found to combat the <strong>influenza virus</strong>.  These fruits are mostly found in Asian and Middle Eastern markets.  Quinces taste much better when they are cooked.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Asian Pear</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">These are perfect for cold storage, can be found in <strong>grocery stores</strong>.  They have significantly more fiber than other pear varieties, good for your heart and help to even ward off diabetes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Kumquats</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">These <strong>olive-sized</strong> shaped citrus fruit are full of disease fighting antioxidants.  Five of these fruits contain about five calories, contain potassium and rich in vitamin A and C.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Star Fruit or Carambolas</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Exotic fruits</strong> are generally high in <strong>Vitamin C</strong>, higher in potassium, they are good for your heart and pack full of fiber.  When buying Star Fruit look for firm, shiny, <strong>even-coloured</strong> yellow fruit.  Remember to handle Star Fruit with care as they bruise easily.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">My concern is that how can any manipulation of a species in order for them to grow <strong>unnaturally</strong> be as safe as those that breed and grow naturally, it just does not equates.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Furthermore  Alison Van <strong>Eenennaam</strong>, a professor of animal science at the University of California,  in favour of this process states “You drive a hybrid car because you want the most efficient vehicle you can have. So why wouldn’t you want the most efficient agriculture you can have”.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Comparing the driving of a hybrid car to a <strong>human consuming</strong> genetically modified food is rather silly.  We do not know what the consequences will be to our bodies in the long term and it would be wiser to air on the side of caution.  Why are <strong>human beings</strong> so hell-bent on speeding up the growth process, who knows what ramification there will be if these modified fish happen to breed with ordinary salmon, and accident do happen irrespective of how much precaution one takes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">There must be some aspect of living things that are allowed to continue in their natural form, free from genetic manipulation, free from generating huge profits and we have an obligation to protect some of our species.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>DNA breakthrough</strong> is yet another Pandora box, for all of the good that as been achieved there is always going to be the downside whereby human beings believing that <strong>unlocking</strong> a few doors into then <strong>DNA</strong> house is not good enough they need to open every aspect, and further down the line or the next generation find themselves with diseases they do not know where they appear from, <strong>health issues</strong> that plague generations all because we do not know when to stop and every breakthrough in the <strong>scientific world</strong> should be, in my opinion control effectively otherwise we will become our own worse enemy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">It is not that we oppose new <strong>technology</strong>, but there must be some aspects that are sacrosanct and we do not interfere with the natural cycle of whether it is animals or plant and  if we cannot understand that concept them something is <strong>definitely wrong</strong> with us as a race.</span></p>
